&lt;p&gt;Southwestern Montana is dotted with a plethora of clear mountain stream and crystal lakes, and many of them are located a short distance the recreation centers of &lt;a href="http://purewestproperties.com/REGIONS/Bozeman.aspx"&gt;Bozeman&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://purewestproperties.com/REGIONS/BigSky.aspx"&gt;Big Sky&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;The trouble lies not in the decision to visit these natural wonders but in which one to choose as the days destination.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;A couple weeks back, my wife and I loaded up kids, car seats, stroller and camera and headed to Fairy Lake which is located in a mountain cirque in the Bridger Range north of Bozeman.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;After exiting the asphalt we followed the Forest Service road approximately 7 miles to the campground, trailhead and parking lot.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;The parking lot also services hikes for the North and Middle Forks of the Brackett Creek hikes as well as the trails to Sacagawea Peak, Hardscrabble Peak and the Bridger Foothills National Recreation Trail so there were more than a handful of cars present on this beautiful Montana day.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;For you hardcore back country ski enthusiasts, this may be an area to place on your list.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;We saw over a half-dozen hikers sporting skis, boots and poles on their ascents up to Sacagawea Peak.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;The north side of this cirque that tops out at over 9,665 feet was still holding tight to its snowpack on this mid-summer day.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;img alt="Jason Frey, PureWest, Hiking Montana, Bozeman Homes for Sale, Bozeman Land For Sale, Montana Land, Montana Ranches" width="375" height="562" vspace="2" hspace="3" border="2" align="left" src="http://www.purewestproperties.comhttp://www.purewestproperties.comhttp://www.purewestproperties.comhttp://www.purewestproperties.comhttp://www.purewestproperties.comhttp://www.purewestproperties.com/Portals/0/Blogs-Jason/Fairy Lake/IMG_8210.JPG" /&gt;Our destination was approximately a half-mile from the parking lot down a well maintained and traveled path.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;We were pleased to find that the trail was wide enough and smooth enough to get our stroller down to the water’s edge.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;The water was exceptionally clear and fish were visible cruising the shallow waters well out into the lake from the shore.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;Small groups of people dotted the shoreline, fishing, lounging in the sun, exercising their dogs and hiking along the creek that emanates from the lake.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;We hiked leisurely around about half of the lake, allowing the kids to dive off the trail to explore wildflowers, collect sticks and throw rocks into the glassy surface of the lake.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;The hike around the entire lakeshore is just over 1.2 miles and takes approximately 40 minutes, if you do not stop to explore wildflowers, collect sticks and throw rocks into the water.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;But if you do not take the time to do those things, you have essentially missed out on the best part of any outing.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;Taking time to enjoy the little things that are easily overlooked define the experience that you take with you.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;This family outing was one that we thoroughly enjoyed, and being a mere 30 minute drive from the center of Bozeman, one we will most certainly re-visit.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;To plan your own outing to this beautiful destination follow Rouse Ave./Bridger Canyon Road from downtown Bozeman approximately 21.5 miles north, passing Bridger Bowl ski area, Bohart Ranch cross-country ski resort, and the Battle Ridge Campground.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160; &lt;/span&gt;Turn left on Fairly Lake Road/FS Road #74 and follow to the campground and trailhead.&lt;span style="mso-spacerun:yes"&gt;&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

Beginning near Bozeman and meandering almost exclusively through private land, the East as it is referred to in the local vernacular, is truly a remarkable and intimate stream that boasts some of the largest&amp;#160;trout in the valley. Access to the river can be exceedingly difficult because of the majority of private and well patrolled land that the river winds through.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;The East is almost exclusively a wade fishery with only perhaps a very limited window of&amp;#160;opportunity to "float" the river.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;The river holds rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"&gt;The composition of the river is such that it creates unending areas that can hold fish. Deep undercut banks and long pools at almost every outside corner&amp;#160;with transitional areas of short riffles between them is the main structural characteristic.&amp;#160; Consistent hatches on the East Gallatin are similar to those on the main channel of the Gallatin. Spring and fall Baetis; Pale Morning Duns are present in June and July; caddis hatches are also present in June, July, and August.&amp;#160;The caddis are prevalent just about every afternoon and evening; Yellow Sallies appear in June and July with Tricos following in August. Terrestrial “hatches” of hoppers, ants, beetles and other insect in July through early October bring added top water action and the nymph fishing is consistently productive when fish are not rising.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"&gt;Joe Brooks Trout Unlimited, based in &lt;a href="http://www.purewestproperties.com/REGIONS/ParadiseValley.aspx"&gt;&lt;font color="#cc0000"&gt;Livingston&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;,&amp;#160;is the oldest active local TU chapter in the state of Montana.&amp;#160;Formed in 1968, they currently have 197 members and&amp;#160;a 10 member Board of Directors dedicated to conserve, protect and restore the Yellowstone River and its tributaries. JBTU has received both state and national attention for their work on behalf of&amp;#160;the Yellowstone River and one of the most successful annual events they host is the one day clean-up of the river.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"&gt;The river clean up emerged after a group of local fishing guides and conservationists realized that the pristine Yellowstone River that they called home was no longer so pristine in some places.&amp;#160;Spring flooding, recreational users, illegal dumping and legacy businesses along the banks of the fabled river had taken their toll over the years.&amp;#160;As members of both Joe Brooks Trout Unlimited and the local Livingston community, these guides and conservationists&amp;#160;knew the integral part that the Yellowstone played in not only the local environment but also the local economy.&amp;#160;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt"&gt;2010 marks the 6&lt;sup&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;th&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/sup&gt; year of the Yellowstone River Clean Up and it was the best year of the event to date in terms of volunteer turnout and pounds of garbage, metal and rubber collected from the river channel.&amp;#160;This past Saturday, April 10&lt;sup&gt;&lt;font size="2"&gt;th&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/sup&gt;, Joe Brooks Chapter, along with the Madison-Gallatin Chapter from &lt;a href="http://www.purewestproperties.com/REGIONS/Bozeman.aspx"&gt;&lt;font color="#cc0000"&gt;Bozeman&lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt; who co-hosted the event, had the support of 152 volunteers including 30 students from the Livingston school system that walked the banks of the Yellowstone and Fleshman Creek.&amp;#160;&amp;#160;In addition, there were 34 boats in the water to help carry collected garbage.&amp;#160;The volunteers pulled 12,460 pounds of trash from the water course throughout the day.&amp;#160;Volunteers stretched from the Carbella public boat access, a few miles north of Yellowstone National Park, all the way to Grey Bear near Big Timber, covering 75 miles of river.&amp;#160; &lt;a href="http://www.purewestproperties.com/propertysearch/propertydetail.aspx?pid=6"&gt;&lt;font color="#cc0000"&gt;Properties along and around &lt;/font&gt;&lt;/a&gt;the Yellowstone benefit from this event as well, keeping the river channel free of debris adds recreational value to many properties with Yellowstone River frontage.&lt;/div&gt;
