Moonlight Basin is a private master plan community located in the Madison mountain range just west of Big Sky Resort. The resort originated from real estate purchased in 1992 from Plum Creek Timber, which was eventually renamed Moonlight Basin Ranch. It features a Locati- designed club house offering fine dining, spa and lodging, and in 2009, opened a par 72, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course (The Reserve at Moonlight Basin) in the Jack Creek drainage. The course layout is 7800 yards (7132 m), at an average elevation of 7500 feet (2286 m).
Moonlight Basin Ski Area opened in December 2003 on the north face of Lone Mountain Offering quick access from most real estate in Big Sky, the ski area features 6 chairlifts, 1,900 skiable acres and averages 400 inches of snowfall per year.
