Big Sky
Big Sky is located at the edge of Yellowstone National Park and framed by towering peaks of the Madison and Gallatin ranges. Big Sky land, under the blue expanse from which it earned its name, is a skier’s paradise -- eighty miles of rolling and pitching cruisers, open bowls and white-knuckle near-verticals.
In 1969, newscaster Chet Huntley and a group of investors acquired much of the real estate in what is now Big Sky Mountain and Meadow Villages. Huntley’s vision of creating a year-round milieu while maintaining the landscape of the Big Sky land has resulted in one of the least crowded and least spoiled retreats in the Western Rockies.
Backdropped by Lone Mountain, Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin have become the stage for some of the most extraordinary downhill skiing on the continent, while surrounding neighborhoods are replete with groomed cross-country trails and heart-stopping wildlife.
Summer activities in Big Sky include fly-fishing in Montana’s legendary rivers, and golf as spectacular as it is satisfying. The National Forest offers a lifetime of opportunities for hiking the Big Sky land, horseback riding, and rafting.
Events that have become the backbone of Big Sky’s summer calendar include the annual chili cook-off, the summer concert series, chuck-wagon rides, Thursday night farmer’s markets, wine tastings and the Country Fair.
